Grinding is not full root excavation
A stump grinder reduces the stump and an agreed portion below grade. It does not normally remove every underground root. Tell the provider if the area is intended for a fence, driveway, structure, utility, or a new tree so the quote can address the intended outcome.
Define the included work
- Measurement: ask where diameter is measured, especially when the root flare is much wider than the cut surface.
- Access: record the narrowest gate and mention steps, slopes, soft ground, fences, and nearby structures.
- Depth: agree on the approximate grinding depth and whether visible surface roots are separate.
- Cleanup: confirm whether chips remain, are hauled away, or are used to backfill the depression.
- Final surface: grass preparation, replanting, and construction may require different follow-up work.
Keep related work separate
Tree removal, log handling, root excavation, grading, topsoil, seeding, hardscape work, and chemical stump treatment are not assumed to be included. This guide does not recommend chemical treatment and does not provide do-it-yourself operating instructions.
Before powered ground work
Michigan excavation rules and private utility lines need attention before work begins. Use the property-preparation checklist and establish in writing who handles the required MISS DIG 811 notice and any separate private-line locating.
